Screaming guitar

Postby Gonzo » Thu Dec 13, 2007 2:23 pm

How does Jake do the harmonic divebomb thing at the beginning of his Paranoid solo? Also the harmonic bombs at the end of SLC Suicide Solution '84.

Cheers

By twisting the guitar neck, maybe. But I'm not sure it is very good for the instrument itself.

It done by bending the low E string at the headstock.
Or try bending the low E behind the nut

i find playing a natural harmonic 5th fret, bending behind the nut and then playing a pinched harmonic on the open string while slowly releasing the string behind the nut gives a nice effect :)

The first one is done by playing harmonics at the 5th fret on the G and B strings then bending them both behind the nut.

The ones at the end of Suicide Solution are done by bending the G string behind the nut then hammering on (with your right hand) to make the harmonics at the 12th and 5th frets.

Bending a neck can be touchy, more so with a bolt on neck, so be careful if you try that method. If you are going to bend the string behind the nut, make sure the strings are wrapped around the tuning peg well (no spaces between the windings and no lapping) and lube the nut. Be gentile as I have seen nuts on cheaper guitars split doing this.
