Reeves Gabrel

Postby Fakeblue » Sat Feb 09, 2008 3:26 am

Hey guys,

I was just listening to the Bowies's 50th birthday gig at NY Madison Square Garden. As you probably know, Reeves Gabrel was still along. This guy is impressive to me because he can get so much nuances in his play. Sometimes he would get almost jazzy, sometimes he"s flirting with heavy progressive riffs, lancinating melodies...I got really impressed. I am not a Bowie specialist though, so I would like to ask, do you guys know about Reeves background ? Why he never got more recognition ? Some artists seem kind of stuck in a dry spell and remain in the shadows for ever. Just like Jimmy Sommerville and his Incredible voice.

It appears to me that one of the reasons Bowie is still around 25 years after his beginning is because he always had the skills to keep a connection between his music and what's going on out there everytime he's coming up with something. Just like Madonna.

I wonder if people like that can go to retirement or are still touring because they need money ? How many people can really get wealthy with rock'n'roll ? Could a wonderful band like Judas Priest have to worry about their pension ? Could there be a proper balance to attain so you can keep your integrity and make money by flirting with some 'symphony orchestra' version of you last acoustic hit ?

He started with Bowie in 1987 in the band 'Tin Machine' they recorded 2 albums and worked together on and off for almost 10 years. They met in an NY bar and became friends, Tin Machine broke up after the drummer was unable to kick a big drug habit.
