Suggestions on new songs ?!

Postby MetalHead » Tue Jan 03, 2006 9:36 am

I've been speaking vaguely with a friend about jamming some
good'ol rock tunes together, and maybe play some local bars.

So I bought a wah pedal and learned Hendrixs Voodoo Chile :)
and just yesterday Van Halens Panama made it's way in my head.

After dinner today, I think I'll start with ... Cat Scratch Fever :D
and then we have Rolling Stones Paint it black as well

So, do you guys have any other suggestions on some good rocksongs to jam.
I'm all ears, but I have to get to the kitchen so I don't burn my food.

Later.

I think you should cut Cat Scratch Fever...that is so overplayed in bars. But then again, some people seem to like it.

What about some Great White? They had some good bar band songs.

Stick to the first two albums. They had the best songs.

Speaking of Nugent...I always thought Wango Tango was an ass kicker! The guitar playing is really nothing stellar, but the song as a whole just kicked ass.

Plus, the subject matter is a personal favorite of mine as well.

Have you heard Panteras version of it ? :)
That's what made me want to look up the original and learn it :D

I don't think so. I think I would have remembered a Pantera version.

I have a live-video with them playing Cowboys From Hell and after the 1st chorus they break into Cat Scratch Fever.

Apparently they have recorded it for some Ted Nugent tribute album :)

If you're in a bar or a cafe, Sweet Home Alabama, Crazy Train, Revelation Mother Earth (Keyboards?), and solo out somewhere. :o

Yes they did record a studio version of that song, I think I have it on my old hardrive.
Whatever here's a short sample: Cat Scratch

About your song choices, definitely do some Van Halen, Panama is cool and have that party vibe all over which is cool for a bar gig.
Like johnthebrucelee said, some Skynyrd is always cool.
Maybe some Judas Priest? Living After Midnight, something easy and that gets people's attention.
Maybe Crazy Train and Twisted Sister's I Wanna Rock too? Some Pride & Glory?

rocky mountain way, rock and roll hoochie coo, and radar love always come to mind when i think of songs i'd like to hear in a bar.
how much i bug the band to play them depends on my consumption.

Dude, Those are all very cool songs to know in case you get requests, but they're all very tired (I'm much older than you guys and they were gettin' tired when I was playin' 'em!). If I were you, I'd do what Jake did.....Go back through those artists catalogs and select some of the nuggetts that most bar bands don't play. Just my 2 cents. Hope I didn't offend anyone. :)

Well, if I were to cover a band I wouldn't choose its most well known song either. Yet, we're talking about a bar gig here, some kind of jam don't we?
Isn't one supposed to attract people's attention as fast as possible? I expect people to say "cool, they're playing Enter Sandman" instead of going "what's that song?". I don't expect people to know every song by Metallica for instance but I'm sure they'll know Enter Sandman and I'm pretty sure they'll get a blast listening to it even if they've heard it 1 millions time before...I bet younger guys wouldn't recognize, say "Phantom Lord", you follow?
On a culture view point, I think bar gigs aren't as "institutionalized" in Europe as they are in the US. I can understand how americans can be bored of hearing the same tunes played by 10 different bands in 10 different bars but I don't think we have the same situation here in Europe.
Just my 2 cents too. :D

I play with some guys that actually enjoy Breaking the Law....ugh...I hate that song! What's next? Run To The Hills? Trooper? ARGHHH!
