Cheating

Postby hashima » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:40 am

Once upon a time after Jake parted ways with Ozzy he
said, he sometimes had felt like cheating by using effects
such as Flanger, Delay, Chorus etc. cuz the musician can
hide his play's mistakes from the audience... but actually...
ain't distortion already cheating? ...so where's the
borderline... where does cheating start? :?

If it sounds like feces on the acoustic then 9 times out of ten it probably is...IMO.

I use all the effects - compressor, chorus, flanger, delay, wah, whammy, pitch shifter, amp modeling, noise gates....who cares? If the non-musician crowd claps and cheers, that is what I am most concerned with.

Funny he said that, because on that Devil's Stomp video, he had a few pedals down there at his feet.

My take on it is, if you like the way it sounds, don't worry about what other musicians think, ;)

Well put mrmetal.

I get the amp cookin'.....then add some fuzz and a pinch of delay.

That's about it for me. 8)

Using effects is not cheating IMO. Using distortion is not cheating because distortion occurs naturally when you overdrive an amplifier. Distortion pedals are simply amplifiers designed to clip and create distortion

The cheating happens when beginners use effects improperly to hide the fact that they can't really play.

Just my opinion, you understand....but I think beginners should stay away from effects, and should practice using only the amp and guitar.

Effects are great once you have the skills to use them tastefully. :)

I think rockstars sometimes say stuff like what Jake allegedly said to interviewers just to be controversial.

I'm not a guitarist, but if it sounds good, then do it! IMO musicians have a tendancy to over think stuff at times.

I didn't start playing with effects until years after I had started playing. Once I had the effects I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

One effect that can be abused is the damn wah, IMO. Too much wah starts to drive me insane.

IMO, effects are a useful way to boost your sound. I dont particuarly like wah, yet it worked so well on Sweet Child o Mine. I dont particuarly like Chorus that much, yet in the 82 Diary of a Madman shows (Randy, not brad or Bernie) it worked fantastically! also randy used echo on crazy train at some shows which helped!

Effects are just tools for you to get what you desire ;)
