Very cool info Dean. Thanks for the detailed answer. I never could seem to get the heavy sound with those pedals. I always just used amp distortion, then I discovered rack EQs and Sonic Max's. Then I just eneded up going to mesa....before the Line 6 pedalboard that is.Deansolo wrote: Also, they're trebly sounding because the "tone" control is actually a "bass cut" circuit. That's why a lot of guys that use Tubescreamers, Od-1's, etc. leave the tone knob all the way CCW.

thanks for the info. I normaly try to stay away from distortion/overdrive pedals with a tone control anyway cos there an unknown quantity and i worry how they'll affect my tone. nice to know exactly what they do.Deansolo wrote: Also, they're trebly sounding because the "tone" control is actually a "bass cut" circuit. Re: To all Guitar Playing Members!
yeah I know.
I had to take care of some personal stuff (dad in hospital, ash clean-up around the house, etc.) but I'm moving forward with the cost analysis this week. Don't worry I haven't given up on this. I just had a small set back with the fires and all that.

I don't think it will ever sound exactly right. They dont make pots like they used to. Thats why the old wah wah's sound better too. It's because of the potentiometers. I use a Boss DS-1 and a Roland JC-77 with no chorus and an original made in USA Charvel Circa 1982 bone stock with .010-.052 strings and its as close as I can get to Jakes tone. Simple set-up with lots of harmonics and fun to play.

Interesting....I can see how you can get close to his tone with a modded JMP 100 watt or a DS-1 and a JC-77. But what do you mean by "they don't make pots like they used to"? manufacturing process? Raw Materials? Tolerances?, Taper? I'm not trying to be cheeky, it's just that I've been in the electronics manufacturing industry for many years (not just music products), and if there's something I don't know I'd like to find out about it.MrEL34 wrote:I don't think it will ever sound exactly right. Wah wah pedals are a different story all together...old wah's sound better due to various reasons not limited to just the potentiometer. Some reasons associated with the pot are purported to be the pots taper, the pot's actual value (Ex. if a pot says it's 500k ohms its usually only about 430k ohms), and the pots mechanical stop. Others have to do with the wah's inductors, old components whose values have drifted and availability of OE spec parts (spec's other than the standard 3 "F's" ...form, fit, and function). Many of the companies who supplied the original parts for those old wah's have simply gone out of business. As in most industries, that forces cost conscious manufacturers to buy more readily available, not always the best sounding, parts.......Which brings me to:
There are some boutique pedal builders (you know who they are!
Anyway, IMHO, you're only gonna be able to get close. No matter what equipment you use. The only one who'll ever nail Jake's tone EXACTLY is the man himself.
Just my opinion and not meant to offend.

Re: To all Guitar Playing Members!
I failed to mention that a pot on an Overdrive pedal does not exactly perform the same function as a pot on a wah wah pedal.
The pot on a wah wah is intended to sweep throughout it's frequency range in real time. When used in a filter like a wah wah, the specs of the pot are much more critical because a wah wah is really just a foot operated tone control. A pot with the proper taper plays a big part in the "vocal" quality of a wah wah pedal.
On the other hand, on an OD pedal (whether it's function is Volume, Drive or Tone), the specs of the pots are not nearly as critical, mostly because you just set the pot to it's desired value and generally leave it alone. Proper capacitor values are more important than pots in this application, as the caps contribute the most to a "gain pedal's" tone.
Big difference.
