Dave does all of the writing, but allows the other guitarists to do their own solos. That is unless he thinks they suck, at which point he tells them what to play.

Some great players mentioned but what about Guthrie Govan, Michael Romeo of Symphony X, and Jon Levin of Dokken is pretty underrated.

I'll second that .

And my boy Chris Degarmo , facinating player .I just wish he would stop flying airplanes and make some music.

I like Chris, but I wouldn't consider him an underrated guitarist though.

i don't know. from what I've heard about Levin,
he seems too much like a Lynch clone, which
within the context of Dokken isn't that bad, but I'd
wish that a guitarist puts more of himself into it
then the guy before him :!:

You got to admit though, that isn't a bad player to try to clone.

How about K.K. Downing or Wolf Hoffman? When you are in a band with another guitarist, it is hard to be known as a guitar hero because there are two. No matter what, you won't be the 100% fan favorite of the band.

Wolf had some awesome riffs and his soloing was very melodic and memorable, I miss Accept

I saw Accept open for Dio during Last In Line tour - that was a kickASS lineup :P

Has anyone mentioned Ronnie Le Tekro of TNT? Check out the solo from Tell No Tales called "Sapphire". Some wickedly fast picking and neo-classical shred. I also like the voice of singer Tony Harnell who left the band yet again

Matt LaPorte of Jon Oliva's Pain is also a monster player who skillfully and tastefully recreates Criss Oliva's guitar work as well as his own wicked material. Quite a find by Jon and a highly demanded project and session guitarist. Also a great and humble guy who always finds time to post and chat with fans.

Wolf has always had monster tone and K.K. and Tipton although in the mighty Priest are definitely under-appreciated. Some excellent choices.

Oh hell yeah. Hardly anyone know who he is - and how many national acts, rock and country, he has contributed guitar work to.

Excellent choice as an underrater!

Yeah, Dan is a behind the scenes kind of guy, but his input usually works for artists. Giant was a pretty cool band as well.

I emailed Guitar World about them doing a piece about Criss Oliva, Jon Oliva's Pain and Matt LaPorte. Hopefully one of these guys will get some much needed pub. I told GW we need more Criss, Matt, and of course Mr Jake E Lee and maybe, just maybe I'll re-subscribe.
