Building my own guitar.

Postby MetalHead » Thu Feb 02, 2006 1:13 pm

Finally I'm in the process of building my own guitar ... soon ;)
I'm just waiting for the moneytransfer to PayPal to complete
and then I'll be a proud owner of ... this ...

Image

with one volume knob(push-pull ala Lynch).
I have not yet decided if I'm going to go with a Floyd Rose like trem
or if I'll stick to a hardtail ala Jake ;)

As for finish, I must admit that the blueburst on one of Jakes Charvels
look great. Possibly some mirror pieces ala Akira Takasaki :D

Like this ...

I don't know if I'm gonna use a maple or a rosewood fretboard,
but it's gonna be a banana-headstock.

Pickups are still unsure, but GFS looks pretty neat, and pretty cheap :D
Hell, I might even go with EMG's

Build two guitars -

1) Blue with Floyd Rose
2) Purple with Hard Tail

And all gold hardware... just like Jake's of course.

for a neckI would go with warmoth or us custom for a body you can goto many places on the net , stay away from Ebay youll get hosed,

I cut out my own bodys these days and get my necks from warmoth as for pick ups its what ever your into.
as for hardware I sgjest allparts or warmoth. especialy for a great jake type hard tale I think that warmoth carries the schaller bridge

For Nitro Lacquer: www.reranch.com (Advantages-Thin Vintage type finish), (Disadvantages-long wait to wet sand and polish, like 4 weeks min. longer the better, some colors, more difficult to get)

For Acrylic Lacquer: see: www.paintyourownguitar.com (Advantages-Shorter wait, easy to get, Krylon, Duplicolor or similar). Disadvantages-about the same as Nitro, still have a longer wait depending on the amount of coats used.

For Urethane (Poly) or catalyzed 2 part Urethane epoxy (automotive paint) Advantages-very fast wait time to wet sand and buff (12-24 hrs.), very durable. Hard to damage. Almost any color is available, Candies, Pearls, Metallics, luminescents etc. Disadvantages-None  May be more difficult to obtain. Must use professional spray gear; gun, compressor, respirator, etc.
I have been using the Urethanes since 1985. The brand is PPG. For clear coating I use PPG OMNI. Fender and Warmoth use PPG. For colors, I use PPG, House of Kolor and Createx water based autopaints with a 2 part Omni clearcoat. A lot of Airbrush folks use Auto Air Colors

Bear in mind that many stores like ReRanch or Stewmac won't ship those kind of products outside of the USA because of their inflammable propreties.
I've bought some color stain from Stewmac in the past but they don't even ship that by airmail anymore.

Close to completion:

The body is ordered and delivered.
I payed for the neck today.
It wasn't a banana-headstock, but close enough.

Image

made by MightyMite too :D

as for pickups ... I still don't know :?
it varies from day to day.
1 day it could be a SD SH-4 with double screw-bobbins row
and another day could be GFS or any other brand.
Right know, I'm curious about the DiMarzio ToneZone(in the bridge atleast) :D
