Suggestions on new songs ?!

Well, if I were to cover a band I wouldn't choose its most well known song either. Yet, we're talking about a bar gig here, some kind of jam don't we?
Isn't one supposed to attract people's attention as fast as possible? I expect people to say "cool, they're playing Enter Sandman" instead of going "what's that song?". I don't expect people to know every song by Metallica for instance but I'm sure they'll know Enter Sandman and I'm pretty sure they'll get a blast listening to it even if they've heard it 1 millions time before...I bet younger guys wouldn't recognize, say "Phantom Lord", you follow?
On a culture view point, I think bar gigs aren't as "institutionalized" in Europe as they are in the US. I can understand how americans can be bored of hearing the same tunes played by 10 different bands in 10 different bars but I don't think we have the same situation here in Europe.

Don't even get me started with "Free Bird"!!!! I Hated Playing that song, yet it never failed, at EVERY gig, no matter what setting, someone yelled "Free Bird, Sweet Home Alabama or Gimme 3 Steps".

Dude, Those are all very cool songs to know in case you get requests, but they're all very tired (I'm much older than you guys and they were gettin' tired when I was playin' 'em!). If I were you, I'd do what Jake did.....Go back through those artists catalogs and select some of the nuggetts that most bar bands don't play. Just my 2 cents. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

I play with some guys that actually enjoy Breaking the Law....ugh...I hate that song! What's next? Run To The Hills? Trooper? ARGHHH!

Hey, you know what? There's a local band in my town who usually end up their set by Freebird and I can tell you nobody in the audience is able to name the original composer. Hell, I'm pretty sure some think it's an original.
A band like Skynyrd is part of the US heritage right? You have some cool musical heritage like Bluegrass, Country or Blues. We simply don't have that in Europe. Skynyrd is a pretty...mmh...exotic band for the average european!

I'm not a musician, so I don't know how fun/boring these might be to play, but they're the sort of songs that I'd like to hear when I'm out with friends. They're not your usual everyone-plays-this kind of bar tunes.
