What was he doing?

Postby angelrabbit » Sat Dec 01, 2012 9:53 am

I found a very old article 1984 of a red colored charvel guitar which Jake
owned. Jake didn't like it because the sound wasn't good.
Jake threw ninja stars
on the back of the guitar, so there are some blemishes, the article said.
Jake said, he could get better sound after he threw ninja stars on it.

What was he doing  ? The ninja stars were big, 20 - 25cm, and it
said these are his collection, he carried them.

He did use that guitar live though as well. I think he used it in the Salt Palace show we all know and the Rio gig and probably many others so maybe the tone deteriorated or something and he stopped using it. Good find Angel.

It's a ninjya star which interests me, I thought it must have something to
do with Bruce Lee, I found Bruce used ninja stars in Green Hornet.
And Jake used his guitar as a target?
Maybe he bought the guitar at a bargain price..

I always wondered if he chose the name Lee as some kind of tribute to Bruce Lee. Its something thats still not clear. Maybe Ozzy knew about his interest in martial arts and Bruce Lee and suggested it.

By the way in the article he reveal his Marshall's tone setting :

Treble : 0
Middle : 8
Bass : 7
Pres : According to venue , seen at 7 with badlands ( see photo )

Master : seem to be 5
Gain : ? ( OD1 used to boost and remove some bass )

The photo of a orange JMP used durring badlands can been seen in the botom of the previous page of the link above.

Also he reveals a strange tunning used for shot in the dark : Low E and low A droped one step to ease fingering ( rest is Eflat )

interviewer: (about amplifier of Jake's own making.)
where did you learn about this kind of electric
technology?
Jake: I learned it from books, electronics magazine or something. But
my father was electric engineer, so I had basic knowledge. Guitar, effector,
cars,amplifier..I fiddled them, learning from him.
===============================

So, Jake's father was electric engineer in Navy?

I saw that magazine before, but I couldn't understand what he
was saying, nor I wasn't interested in what he was saying from the start..
about equipment..I just thought (is this Jakey's room?) or
he had a lot of colorful boxes..

Interesting damaging/or to him decorating his style-list Red guitar so: I've seen those Ninja stars that they use in martial-Arts. Their very beautiful top of the line but very dangerous devices: cool to know that JAKE knows how to use them..'I'm sure in a careful way, too (not damaging his property of Instruments). smile!!

I don't know difficult things about guitar, but in that blog's article,
Jake talked about the temperature on the stage,

(Jake)I can get better sound when the amp is warmed up after using it a little.. the sound tends to be thin(?) in the cold night.
(interviewer)Why is there such a big temperature difference, even though you're in doors.
(Jake)Sometimes, the back door is open to carry support band(?)'s equipment out. Cold wind blows in if the back door is right behind the stage.
(interviewer)such a small things make a big difference
(Jake)It can untune the strings. Sometimes the guitar sounds out of tune
just when I move from a hot place on the stage to cold
spot around the amp where the lights arn't on.
(interviewer)How do you play if the amplifier isn't warmed up enough because of the back door?

■I can't translate following well, because I don't know the word usage of musical things but maybe it's the most important point for guitarist■

(Jake)Normally, I play using tone control of the amp. I try to
increase the presence a little. No treble, base is 7, mid range
is 8.
(interviewer)You don't use treble control?
(Jake)In most cases, I set it 0. When I use wireless,
the sound becomes(?) thin..When I use wireless, It boosts around 6k - 8k ??? So, in order to manipulate this, I don't use treble of amp.

======================================

I really love to SEE him play, but not interested in equipments..
I only know his main guitar is charvelized stratcaster whitey
and it's gone. :)

I remember how to make pancakes, the frying pan
needs to be warmed up before we pour pancake mix :)
