Re: When you'll be 70.....
Hmmmm...I don't know. I've been listening to a bit of Frank Sinatra lately.
Is that a sign of things to come?

Re: When you'll be 70.....
sure... further I think its important to involve my grandchildren with the style of Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy and especially Jakes work... it should be fun watching the 1984 tour in ... omg... 2057... maybe that hair thing will become popular again...
Re: When you'll be 70.....
What a sad and depressing thread!!!!!!!!!!!
I have two children, both boys, they are both under the age of ten, so if you think the music we listen to is bad (like i thought my mam and dad's music was) then think what our future generation will think of Jake and the boys tearing it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow, i was just gonna put on a bit of Akker Bilk then as well!!!

Re: When you'll be 70.....
I doubt it.....I will always love Black Sabbath, but other than that I rarely listen to metal....
Re: When you'll be 70.....
IF I live to be 70,I'll probably be deaf....
Re: When you'll be 70.....
Maybe.....sometimes I wonder if I'm not already bored with metal. But I come back to it over over and over again. I found myself listening to John Coltrane's 'Blue Train' lately. I find Jazz interesting but something's missing...I don't know....The only sure thing is that I haven't found myself tranced out like I used to when I was in my 20 listening to Helloween....and I haven't bought any metal cd for years...I stick to my guns saying 80'S metal is the best.Deansolo wrote:Hmmmm...I don't know. Re: When you'll be 70.....
I don't know if I'm just tired of all my metal cd's or if age is setting in. But, I find myself settling down with classic rock these days. We have an awesome classic rock channel here - never did like it much until here recently. I even broke down and bought a Peter Frampton cd just to have "Do You Feel Like We Do" in the house. Hopefully, I'll get no softer than this. However, if I do, I've already told my daughter to shoot me and get me out of my (and her) misery!
Don't worry about me too much, Poets! I'm still spinning Operation Mindcrime regularly!! bwahahahaha!!

Re: When you'll be 70.....
This is an interesting thread and I know where Doobie's coming from.
I kind of "settled down", as she put it, with Classic Rock and Classic Metal a few years ago and really haven't felt the need to go finding any new rock and metal. Maybe age IS setting in. Call me old...but to me, and most of my friends that are over 40,...New Rock and Metal just doesn't sound very good. The new bands (to me anyway) don't seem too have any sense of history....where the music came from...how a good SONG should be put together, i.e., That there should be an 'A' section, a 'B' section, a bridge that should add "tension", a solo that should be a 'song within a song', and a recap that resolves everything. I'm not too fond of songs that sound like a bunch of 1/2 baked ideas strung together around a riff in the same key.
Anyway, that's the way I see it. I'm sure I'll still be listening to Classic Metal when I'm 70, as it's the music of my generation...Just like my folks still listen to the Big Band music of their generation.

Deano, you hit the nail on the head with the line, "go finding any new rock and metal'. We never had to go looking for it "back in the day". It was everywhere. It was our genre. It was our music of the 80's. Now, you have "to go looking to find it" and rarely, in the 90's could you even find it. Once you do find it now, it's just not the same to me either. Makes me wonder if it is the music or is it just us *ahem* progressing further in the AGING process?!?! Ack! Regardless, it's apparently happening to some of us here. But, I've yet to get my hair chopped off into one of those old-lady-looking stacked short jobbers. When/if I do that, you'll know I'm old!!
Re: When you'll be 70.....
Man, you are my saviour. Everytime I tried to explain what a good song should be made of, I've been told not to Boggart. Out of my poor English I figured it had something to do with your compatriot Humphrey Boggart so I began to wonder if he was a music critic which was strange since I heard of him as been an actor. Ha! What the hell am I doing in a French speacking country.....Deansolo wrote:This is an interesting thread and I know where Doobie's coming from.

Back to your comments I enjoy your definition of a good sond with the terms 'A' section, 'B' section, a bridge that should add "tension", a solo that should be a 'song within a song', and a recap that resolves everything.
I would like to backup that with examples if you don't mind, just to make sure I understand what you meant.
First, the 'A' section to me should be the beginning of the song where the main riff is played, the 'B' section is a part of the song where the main riff isn't played but the rythm is kept on by adding some extra chords that tend to offer many ways to steer the song in a lot of new directions. This pushes the listener to wonder about where is it going and this is what you call a 'tension'. About the solo that should be a song within a song then I guess you'll agree to quote Marty Friedman's solo in Megadeth 'Tornado of souls' or Rhoads solo in Mr Crowley. Finally about the recap that resolves everything I guess you just mean the main riff played again just to tell the listener we are back to the beginning, we are not going anywhere else, and it kinds of cuts the tension created before. It kind of cools down the listener just before the song ends.
Is that correct ?

Re: When you'll be 70.....
For the most part, you are correct.
What I was refering to is the songs basic structure.....Most rock songs have what I call an 'A' section (the verse or verses), a 'B' section (the chorus), and a bridge that adds 'tension' (somewhat like the 'scherzo' in classical music), which usually leads to the climax of the song (the solo). Then comes the recap...which alot of times is a revisiting of the verse(s) and the chorus.
As you know things like Intro's, Outro's (I always liked that word!), Codas and so forth can be added to the basic song structure.
Crazy Train, if I remember correctly, is a good example of a song that has most, if not all of those elements...The part right before the solo, immediately after Ozzy sings: "I know that things are going wrong for me, etc."...adds tension and leads to the 'song within a song' (Randy's solo).
Ive noticed that alot of new songwriters leave out the 'tension' dynamic in the bridges which, in my humble opinion, tends to make their work sound a bit one-dimensional.
I like to think that the best Rock and Metal, are SONGS first and foremost. Not just a bunch of riffs strung together with vocals on top.

Oh and BTW...Bogart was a term used when someone was holding on to the joint for too long. It referred to the fact that in his movies, Humphrey Bogart always had a cigarette hanging from his lips while he talked.

Re: When you'll be 70.....
You didn't offend me. Just makes me wonder what the hell you guys are listening too when you say "new metal" and "it's not as good".
The song always came first for me. I would much rather have a good song than an awesome solo. So on that, we totally agree.

Re: When you'll be 70.....
Lemmy said a good solo is an under 20 second solo. Although I do agree the song comes first, limiting a solo to 20 seconds is criminal to me. What do you think ?mrmetal wrote:The song always came first for me. I would much rather have a good song than an awesome solo. So on that, we totally agree.
